The Tale of Mari y Juana
una historia de dos hermanas
Long before there were cans and bottles, there were two sisters standing in their abuela’s kitchen in East L.A., stirring a pot of agua fresca on a Sunday afternoon. One sister — a flower tucked behind her ear — had a green thumb and an even greener thumb-print on everything she touched. The other, never seen without her sombrero, had a nose for flavor and a habit of sneaking extra fruit into the pitcher when nobody was looking.
Legend has it that one particularly hot summer, the sisters decided the family recipe needed something more — a little lift to go with the guava, the tamarindo, the piña. What started as a kitchen experiment between sisters became Mari y Juana: cannabis-infused aguas frescas made the old-fashioned way, with real fruit, real cane sugar, and a wink at tradition.
These days the recipes have grown up — bottles, cans, and even a cold drink mix you can stir up yourself — but the spirit hasn’t changed. Every batch is still made in California, of Mexican descent, by two sisters (and the familia who joined them along the way) who’d rather you sit back, relax, and unwind. ¡Provecho!
